REVEREND BLAKELY N. SCOTT
|
Blakely N. Scott, a native of Columbia, SC and son of the late Lillie Mae Neal Scott and the late Blakely Scott, Jr., is a product of the public school system of Columbia, a graduate of Palmer College, the University of South Carolina, Morris College School of Religion, and the Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary. He was conferred the honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree by Morris College in May 1993.
He is Pastor of the First Nazareth Baptist Church (Columbia) and the Mount Moriah Baptist Church (Hopkins). In addition to his pastoral responsibilities, he is an instructor in the Morris College School of Religion Extension Program, the Moderator of the Midlands Baptist Association, Inc. and a member of the KOBAN Board of Columbia. In May 1998, he retired from Benedict College where he began as Assistant Director of Auxiliary Services, later serving as College Minister, then as Instructor of Religion and Philosophy. He served as Moderator of the Wateree Baptist Association - Upper Division from 1981 to January 2000, Dean of the Young People's Christian Assembly at Benedict College from 1985 to 2001, and Assistant/ Secretary of the Gethsemane Baptist Association.
He has served on the Hospice Board at Baptist Medical Center, Community Care, Inc. Board, the Connie Maxwell Children's Home (Greenwood, SC) Advisory Board and the Columbia Housing Development Corporation Board. He is a Madon, a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., and Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity. He was selected as one of the Outstanding Young Men of the Year in 1980 and 1982, received the Living the Legacy Award from the COlumbia Section of the National Council of Negro Women in 1982, listed in Who's Who in the SOuth and Southeast in 1986 and Who's Who in Religion in 1991, selected as Business Associate of the Year by the Columbia, SC Chapter of the American Business Women's Association (ABWA) in 1987 and by the Midlands Chapter - ABWA in 1998. He was inducted into the Columbia (SC) Housing Authority's Wall of Fame in April 2004. He was awarded the Order of the Palmetto in Septemeber 2004.
He is married to the Former Mary Brooks, and they are parents of two daughters and grandparents of one grandson. He uses as his motto text for life from Proverbs 3:5-6: "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all they ways acknowlege Him, and He shall direct they paths."
